Cartomiser - function, structure and difference to the clearomiser

Cartomiser explained: structure, function and difference to a clearomiser. Find out when a cartomod is worthwhile and what you should look out for when buying one - read now.

A cartomiser is an early type of e-cigarette atomiser that combines a heating coil, wicking material and e-liquid reservoir into a single compact unit. Have you come across the term in older forums or product descriptions and wondered whether a cartomiser is still worth using today? That’s exactly what we’re looking at here. You’ll find out how the technology works, how it differs from more modern clearomisers, and when a cartomod – that is, a mechanical mod combined with a cartomiser – still makes sense. You’ll also get buying tips and a clear comparison with today’s pod systems and disposable vapes.

The cartomizer is a further development of the first generation of atomizers and combines two components in a single housing: the heating coil and a surrounding polyfill or cotton wick material that serves as a liquid reservoir. The word is a combination of ‘cartridge’ and ‘atomizer’.

Unlike a classic tank vaporiser, you cannot see the liquid through a viewing window because the liquid is completely bound within the fibre wicking material. Depending on the design, a typical cartomiser holds around 1.0 to 2.0 ml of liquid and is screwed onto a battery mod with a 510 or eGo thread.

Technically, it is a resistance vaporiser: electricity flows through a Kanthal or nichrome coil, usually with a resistance of 1.5 to 3.0 ohms, heating the saturated wick and producing vapour. Because the reservoir and coil are firmly connected, the cartomiser is usually replaced entirely once the coil has burnt out.

You fill the polyfill either directly through small openings at the top or bottom, or you use a pre-filled version. When you take a drag on the mouthpiece, the mod is activated, the coil heats up to around 200–250 °C and vaporises the e-liquid absorbed by the wick. Power outputs typically range between 7 and 15 watts – sub-ohm vaping with cloud production is therefore not intended.

Cartomod – Cartomizer meets battery mod

A cartomod refers to the combination of a mechanical or regulated battery mod and a cartomiser, often in a tube-style design (tube mod). This combination was popular before large tanks and sub-ohm coils became widespread. Today, cartomods are mainly found among collectors and purists who appreciate the direct, pipe-like draw.

Distinction from disposable vapes

A disposable vape (disposable) now also contains a coil, e-liquid and battery in a sealed unit, but becomes completely electronic waste once emptied. A cartomiser, on the other hand, is modular: you unscrew it, leaving the battery mod behind. This makes it more environmentally friendly, but less convenient than modern pod systems.

The question of cartomizer vs clearomizer comes up time and again. The clearomizer has largely replaced the cartomizer technically, as it holds more e-liquid, is transparent and features a replaceable atomiser head. Nevertheless, there are situations where a cartomizer is the right choice:

  • Draw: Cartomizers deliver a tight, cigarette-like MTL (mouth-to-lung) draw. Those switching from tobacco cigarettes often find this pleasant.
  • Checking resistance: Values between 1.8 and 2.5 ohms are suitable for mods with 7–12 watts. Resistance values that are too low will overload small batteries.
  • E-liquid choice: High VG content (over 70%) absorbs less well into the polyfill. Use 50/50 e-liquids or classic PG-heavy blends.
  • Thread standard: Look for 510 threads so you can fit the cartomiser onto modern battery mods. eGo threads are only compatible with an adapter.
  • Refillable or pre-filled: Pre-filled cartridges are convenient, but are now rarely available in Switzerland. Refillable versions are more economical.

Common mistakes: Dry hits without enough e-liquid in the wick will permanently burn out the coil. Overfilling, on the other hand, leads to leaks through the air holes.

Can I refill a cartomiser multiple times?

Yes, refillable cartomisers can be refilled 5 to 15 times before the polyfill carbonises and the flavour deteriorates. After that, you should replace the unit, as the coil cannot be changed separately.

Is a cartomizer still worth it in 2025?

For newcomers, pod systems or regulated clearomisers are more practical. Cartomisers remain appealing to those with a nostalgic preference, Cartomod users and anyone who prefers a very tight MTL draw.

What is the main difference between a cartomizer and a clearomizer?

The clearomiser has a visible tank and replaceable coils. The cartomiser stores e-liquid in the wick and is disposed of as a whole. Clearomisers offer more capacity and flexibility, whilst cartomisers score points for simplicity.

Is a cartomizer the same as a disposable e-cigarette?

No. A disposable vape has a built-in battery and is thrown away in its entirety. The cartomiser is simply the atomiser unit that is screwed onto a reusable battery mod.

The cartomizer is a piece of vaping history and technically outdated, but not dead. It still serves its purpose for a tight MTL draw or a classic cartomizer setup. Newcomers usually find modern pod systems more convenient. Take a look at our selection of e-cigarettes, compare MTL and DTL models and, if necessary, check for suitable coils for your preferred setup. This range is intended for adults aged 18 and over.
