Click system - refill liquid with quick-release fastener

Click system explained: How the Easy Fill System works with e-cigarettes. Advantages, selection and care for an easy liquid change without spilling.

A click system on e-cigarettes is a quick-release mechanism on the tank or clearomiser that allows you to open the mouthpiece with a click and refill your e-liquid without unscrewing anything. Anyone who has ever struggled with a stuck top cap, leaving their fingers sticky, will notice the difference straight away. The system was developed to ensure that changing the e-liquid on the go is quick and easy – no tools required, no spills and no air left in the tank. In the following guide, you’ll learn how the click system works technically, what variants are available and what you should look out for when buying, so that your vape suits your everyday life.

The click system – also known as a click system clearomiser or easy-fill system – is a locking mechanism on the tank of an e-cigarette. Instead of a traditional screw thread, the top section opens with a quick press or a quarter-turn. Internally, the mechanism usually works with a spring mechanism and an O-ring, which seals the tank against leaking e-liquid.

The click system should be distinguished from the simple top-fill principle: ‘top fill’ merely describes the fact that the filling opening is located at the top. A top-fill click combines this position with the quick-opening mechanism. Traditional tanks often open via a thread, whilst modern pod and sub-ohm atomisers more frequently use the click closure. Typical components include: the outer tank glass, the inner liquid channel, a magnetic or spring-loaded lid, and the silicone seal that prevents e-liquid from leaking.

In everyday use, refilling takes place in three steps: press down on the mouthpiece or turn it slightly, the lid pops open, fill with e-liquid, click the lid shut. Most systems produce a clicking sound to signal that the cap has locked into place correctly.

Magnetic quick-release closure

Some models use small magnets to hold the lid in place. The advantage: the mechanism suffers hardly any wear and tear because there is no spring to fatigue. You’ll often find this variant in pod systems with replaceable 2 ml cartridges.

Spring and push-release systems

With push-release variants, you press a point on the mouthpiece, causing the lid to flip open to the side. This design is robust, but the hinge area needs cleaning occasionally to prevent dried-up e-liquid from blocking the click mechanism.

Not every click system is equally well made. The following points will help you choose:

  • Leak-proofing: Look for high-quality O-rings and a snug fit. Cheap click systems tend to leak from the sides when the tank gets warm.
  • One-handed operation: A good system can be opened and closed with one hand. Test how it feels in-store or watch videos before buying online.
  • Tank capacity: Standard tanks hold 2 ml (Swiss market), sub-ohm tanks up to 5 ml. The larger the capacity, the less often you’ll need to refill.
  • Coil replacement: Check whether the coil is accessible separately from the click mechanism. Otherwise, you’ll have to empty the tank completely every time you change the coil.
  • Spare parts: Click-on caps with magnets or springs are wear parts. A manufacturer that supplies replacement seals and caps significantly extends the lifespan of your vaporiser.

Common mistakes: pressing too hard after filling (forces e-liquid through the air channel), overfilling beyond the max mark, or refilling a hot tank immediately after vaping. Let the tank cool down briefly – this reduces the risk of e-liquid seeping down through the chimney.

Is a click-lock system more leak-proof than a screw cap?

Provided they are of the same quality, both are equally leak-proof. The screw cap holds up slightly better in the long term because the thread has no moving parts. However, a well-maintained click system with intact O-rings offers the same reliability in everyday use.

Does the click system work with any e-liquid?

Yes, both thin 50/50 e-liquids and thicker 70/30 VG mixtures can be filled in without any problems. For very viscous e-liquid, a dropper bottle helps to ensure you don’t block the e-liquid channel.

Can I replace a click cap if it no longer clicks?

In many cases, yes. Manufacturers offer spare parts such as top caps, seals and magnets. Before buying, check whether your model is listed as a spare part in their range.

Are click systems also suitable for beginners?

They are ideal for beginners in particular, as refilling is intuitive. Many pod systems with click-lock mechanisms are specifically designed for adults switching to e-cigarettes for the first time.

The click system makes refilling your e-cigarette noticeably quicker and cleaner than traditional screw-on caps. Key factors are sturdy O-rings, a precise quick-release mechanism and the availability of spare parts. If you’re looking for an atomiser with an Easy Fill system, compare tank capacity, coil system and ease of use. In our selection of atomisers and clearomisers, you’ll find suitable models with a click mechanism – from compact pods to sub-ohm tanks. Matching coils and seals are also available separately.
