Self-winding vaporisers - RTA, RDA and self-winding vaporiser explained
Self-winding vaporiser guide: differences between RTA, RDA and self-winding tanks, purchase criteria, care and practical tips for Swiss vapers aged 18 and over.
A rebuildable atomiser is a type of atomiser where you install the heating wire (coil) and cotton wick yourself, rather than screwing in pre-made coil heads. This approach is aimed at vapers who want to customise flavour, vapour production and resistance – whilst saving money in the long run, as only wire and cotton are used up. This guide shows you how a rebuildable atomiser is constructed, the differences between RTAs and RDAs, what to look out for when buying in Switzerland, and what mistakes to avoid in practice.
A rebuildable atomiser – often also called a coil-building atomiser or Rebuildable Atomiser (RBA) – consists of a deck with two or more screws (posts) to which you attach a coiled wire. Beneath this, or inside the tank, sits the e-liquid reservoir; when the mod is activated, electricity flows through the coil, the cotton wick absorbs the e-liquid, and this is vaporised into vapour.
Unlike traditional sub-ohm tanks with pre-built coils, with a rebuildable atomiser you choose:
- Wire material (Kanthal, SS316L stainless steel, nickel, Ni80)
- Coil geometry (single, dual, Clapton, Fused Clapton)
- Resistance in ohms (typically 0.15–1.2 Ω)
- Cotton wick and airflow characteristics
This level of control is why advanced vapers prefer a rebuildable tank or dripper: flavour, vapour production and e-liquid consumption can be precisely tailored to your own setup.
RTA – Rebuildable Tank Atomizer
An RTA combines a coil deck with an e-liquid tank, usually 2–5 ml. You build the coil once, place the cotton correctly in the e-liquid channels and then vape for several days without needing to refill. Anyone looking to buy an RTA gets the typical everyday rebuildable device: longer lifespan, moderate e-liquid consumption, solid flavour reproduction.
RDA – Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer
The RDA atomiser has no tank. You drip e-liquid directly onto the coil and cotton – typically 5–10 drops, which are enough for around 10–15 puffs. RDAs therefore deliver the most direct flavour release and are suitable for cloud chasers as well as for testing new e-liquids.
RDTA – A hybrid of both
RDTA models have a tank beneath the deck, with the cotton hanging down into the e-liquid. This reduces the need for constant dripping whilst retaining the open flavour profile of an RDA.
A rebuildable atomiser is not a plug-and-play product. These points determine whether you’ll enjoy the device:
- Deck design: A two-post Velocity deck is beginner-friendly; postless decks are suitable for complex coils. Ensure there is enough space beneath the coil so that the cotton isn’t compressed.
- Airflow: Side airflow supports cooler, aromatic vapour. Bottom airflow provides more heat and volume. Many models offer both – check whether the airflow suits your vaping style (MTL or DL).
- Resistance and wattage range: Your mod must safely support the built coil’s resistance. For 0.3–0.5 Ω, you usually need 40–80 watts; for sub-ohm builds under 0.2 Ω, you’ll need correspondingly more power reserve and high-capacity batteries (at least 20 A continuous current).
- Tools and measuring equipment: An ohmmeter or an adjustable mod with a resistance display is essential to rule out short circuits before connecting the battery.
- Spare parts: O-rings, glass tanks and screws should be available as replacements. When buying a rebuildable atomiser in Switzerland, it’s worth looking for well-established models with readily available accessories.
A typical beginner’s mistake is packing the cotton too tightly. This restricts the e-liquid flow, the coil burns out and the flavour becomes harsh. The cotton should slide loosely through the coil and only lightly cover the e-liquid channels.
Is a rebuildable atomiser suitable for beginners?
For absolute beginners, pod systems or tanks with pre-built coils are simpler. However, anyone willing to get to grips with resistance, Ohm’s law and wicking techniques can get started straight away with a simple RTA.
How long does a self-built coil last?
Depending on the e-liquid (sweetened flavours shorten the lifespan) and power settings, between 5 and 20 days. A quick dry burn and a cotton change significantly extend the lifespan before you need to rebuild the coil completely.
Which wire is recommended for beginners?
Kanthal A1 in 0.4 mm is affordable, stable and forgiving of mistakes. SS316L stainless steel is an alternative if you also want to use temperature control later on.
Can I use any e-liquid in a rebuildable atomiser?
Generally speaking, yes, although RTAs and RDAs handle thicker VG-heavy e-liquids (70/30 or 80/20) better. Very thin PG-based e-liquids can leak through large airflow openings.
A rebuildable atomiser gives you full control over flavour, vapour and cost – but requires a basic technical understanding and careful handling of wire, cotton and the battery. If you want to buy an RTA, you’ll get an everyday companion with a tank; if you’re looking for pure flavour development, choose the RDA atomiser.
